In a tragic development that has sent shockwaves across the political and medical spheres, Dr. Paul Akintelure, a prominent figure in Ondo State politics, and governorship aspirant for the Ondo guber race and a distinguished medical practitioner, has passed away at the age of 61.

A native of Igbotako, Ondo State, Dr. Akintelure was a towering figure in both the political arena and the field of medicine. He first rose to prominence as the running mate to late Rotimi Akeredolu, whne they both contested under the banner of the Alction Congress of Nigeia (ACN) in the highly anticipated Ondo State Governorship Election of 2011. Beforen then, he had contested for Senate on the platform of the4 Alliance for Democracy (AD) for Ondo South Senatorial District and lost to Senator Bolu Kunlere of the Labour Party (LP).

Prior to his foray into politics, Dr. Akintelure distinguished himself in the field of medicine, earning widespread acclaim for his expertise and dedication to healthcare. Dr. Akintelure attended the esteemed University of Ibadan, where he acquired his medical education with distinction. His journey in the medical profession was marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a deep commitment to improving the health outcomes of communities across Ondo State and beyond.

His most recent public outings were the funeral service of former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu and the launch of his campaign for governor on the platform of the APC in Akure. He was also on hand to welcome President Bola Tinubu's condolence visit to the Akeredolu family in March.

Mid March he was in Abuja to make political consultations with his political mentors regarding his Ondo State governorship ambition. He fell ill in Abuja and was moved to Lagos to seek proper medical help. Unfortunately, his situation got worse and he eventually passed on early on March 26.

News of Dr. Akintelure's passing has elicited an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the political spectrum and the medical community. Colleagues, friends, and admirers alike remember him as a visionary leader, a compassionate healer, and a true son of Ondo State who dedicated his life to the service of others.

Recall that, Akintelure in a statement on Thursday, his spokesperson, Oladapo Akintelure, raised an alarm over alleged threat to his life.

The statement said: “Our determination remains steadfast, our spirits are high, and our resolve to drive positive change in Ondo State remains unyielding. For me, this endeavour is rooted in principles of peace, unity, and collaboration.

“We are high in spirit and won’t relent in our drive towards a better Ondo State. The threat against me only strengthened my resolve to stand up for what is right and just. I will not allow fear to dictate our path forward.”

Dr Paul was a consummate community development activist. He was co-founder of Ikale Vanguard and a former chairman of Igbotako Development Forum. His medical centre, Broad Hospital is rated as one of the best in Ikotun Lagos.
